What is Amateur Radio in Utah?

Amateur (ham) radio is a licensed radio service that helps people communicate locally, statewide, and worldwide. In Utah, ham radio supports community events, backcountry safety, severe weather awareness, and emergency communications.

Utah HamNet is an information network. We collect and share trusted links, testing schedules, club activities, nets, and practical guidance to help new and experienced operators stay connected.

New to ham radio? Start with licensing basics below, then check Events for upcoming test sessions and meetups.

Quick Start

  • Get licensed: Technician is the most common entry license.
  • Find a test: Look for local VE (Volunteer Examiner) sessions.
  • Listen first: Monitor repeaters to learn etiquette and net formats.
  • Join a net: Nets are friendly, structured on-air meetups.

Stories from Utah Operators

Real stories help new operators imagine what’s possible: mountain-top contacts, community service events, emergency drills, and learning electronics.

  • Backcountry comms: simple handheld + good antenna + planning.
  • Public service: marathons, parades, and community safety support.
  • Field Day: learning by doing, with mentors and hands-on setup.

Testing & Study

Most people start with the Technician exam. Study guides, practice tests, and local mentors make it approachable.

  • Practice tests: take several and review missed questions.
  • Local prep: clubs often host “ham cram” sessions.
  • Hands-on: learn programming, antenna basics, and operating etiquette.

Check the Events page for test sessions and study groups.

Common Frequency Concepts (Utah)

Repeaters

Repeaters extend handheld/mobile range. Many support emergency service and local nets.

  • VHF/UHF local coverage
  • Linked systems (regional)
  • CTCSS/DCS tones

Nets

Nets are organized, friendly on-air gatherings led by a net control station.

  • Weekly club nets
  • Training/tech nets
  • Emergency practice nets

Simplex

Direct radio-to-radio contacts (no repeater). Great for events and local coordination.

  • Short range, quick setup
